It’s always nice to see stars using their fame for good, but too often their good intentions are just a way to camouflage products that don’t live up to their reputation. Not here: These products were created and developed by celebrities, and are guaranteed green. So whether you’re stocking your closet, your pantry, your makeup bag, your cleaning supplies, or your shoe rack, turn to these companies for an eco-friendly–and celeb-approved–solution.
1. Edun by Bono and Ali Hewson
Edun isn’t just about eco-friendly fibers–although they do offer men’s and women’s organic tees, denim, and dresses–Bono and his wife Ali Hewson founded the line to support the development of communities in Africa, South America, and India, in countries including Peru, Kenya, India, Mauritius, Tunisia, and Madagascar. The clothes are produced in locally-owned factories–though Edun monitors them–and provide these nations with sustainable industries that allow them to trade on an international scale. Better working conditions and safer materials mean a greener product, and the results are healthier for the workers and the environment.
2. Josie Maran Cosmetics by Josie Maran
Leave it to a model to make eco-friendly cosmetics accessible to everyone: After 10 years of having her famous face on magazine covers, print ads, and in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, motherhood inspired Josie Maran to develop her own line of non-toxic makeup, Josie Maran Cosmetics. The moisturizer, blush, eye shadow, mascara, liner, lip gloss, and more are made without parabens, petrochemicals, animal testing, or fragrances, and even the packaging is recyclable or biodegradable. And although the products aren’t certified organic, Maran intends to keep up with changing technology in the cosmetics industry: “I have reformulated before and I am reformulating some products now to make them even healthier,” she told TreeHugger’s Jasmin in May. “There is always going to be newer greener chemistry and I’m committed to keeping up with it.”
3. Fashion by Stella McCartney
Stella McCartney may have been destined for fame–with her famous parents (Linda and Paul McCartney) and friends (Gwyneth, Madonna), it was only a matter of time–but the modern silhouettes, vegan materials, and green commitment of her eponymous fashion line have made her a celebrity in her own right. Her designs are entirely animal-free (even the bags and shoes use plant-derived fibers instead of leather), and her organic skin product line, Care, steers clear of endangered plants, petrochemicals, parabens, and fragrances. Last summer, McCartney launched her first organic collection, complete with underwear, dresses, coats, and tops.
4. Newman’s Own by Paul Newman
Paul Newman didn’t just leave his mark on American cinema–he also left it on your salad. On the shelves of most grocery stores, Newman’s Own products make organic accessible. The line is full of pantry staples–like pretzels, cookies, candy, dried fruit, coffee, and tea–that follow USDA Oregon Tilth, which means farms haven’t used pesticides in at least three years, and all the after-tax proceeds from the natural pasta sauce, dressings, lemonade, and salsa that are part of the Newman’s Own line are donated to charities across the globe.
5. Eco-Friendly Jewelry by Gladys Knight
In April, R&B singer Gladys Knight announced plans for her own eco-friendly jewelry line in conjunction with Robert Rose Jewelry; the singer has taken the lead on designing the pieces, and the company plans to use Earth-friendly materials including “recycled glass, Fair Trade beads, and parts made from Tagua nuts (a sustainable rainforest crop often referred to as vegetable ivory),” according to the press release. While we’ll have to wait until December to see the finished product in department stores and on the Home Shopping Network, here’s to hoping environmental concerns remain a factor in all stages of the line’s development.
