Mercedes has confirmed the rumors that have been flying about – they will revive the classic Gullwing Mercedes as an all electric dynamo car. It’s exactly the kind of car James Bond would drive in his next movie if it were available. Not only is it a beautiful update to the classic model, but it’s got the horsepower to back it up – 526 horsepower to be exact. This ain’t your grandpa’s Gullwing – this is the SLS AMG Supercar and is the “exciting future of the super sportscar” if we’ve ever seen it. Wired has it nailed with the...
New York City will have its second hydrogen fueling station, maybe to detour the masses from gasoline still further. Shell, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the US Department of Energy and General Motors jointly have opened it at JFK international airport. Shell looks forward to continue the streak in bringing one more to NYC, in the Bronx, soon. That will ensure the deploying of Shell’s first cluster of hydrogen filling stations....
The latest is a very un-green cell phone idea, that helps you pollute the air with cigarette smoke along with all the other emissions associated with mobile devices. Yes, light up with a built-in cigarette lighter! Engadget makes it clear that there is absolutely no evidence that this is a real item. But they also note – and we completely agree – that a cell phone with a built-in cigarette lighter is too good not to point out…especially on a Friday. The Lighter Phone SB6309 is shown off at SeaBright. (Click with caution: I got a malware warning when I...
A recent report shows that movie studios have diverted 63% (40.2 million pounds!) of their solid waste (read: sets and the like) to recycling processes rather than landfills. Because of these efforts, they’ve reduced emissions by an amount equal to removing 7,315 cars from the road, according to an April press release from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). This news slipped under the radar, as press releases from something called the “Solid Waste Task Force” are bound to. This group is actually a rather exciting and relevant joint program of the MPAA and the Alliance of Motion Picture...
New Scientist shows us another reason why preserving biodiversity is so important: Preventing the spread of diseases from animals to humans. A new paper from scientists at Portland State University looks at the spread of the Sin Nobre Virus, otherwise known as the Hantavirus (which kills about 500 people per year in the US) and found that increased biodiversity limited the spread of the virus among deer mice. It’s the droppings of the deer mice which spreads the disease among humans: Low Diversity = High Disease The researchers made the connection between increased mammal diversity and lower infection rates among deer mice after conducting field work...

Well, Dell finally can do a little victory dance. Sort of. Dell has been after Apple for awhile now, challenging that the company greenwashes its line of MacBooks. Now Dell has made a little progress in its quest for green computer cred domination – the latest challenge by Dell against how Apple phrases its ads has resulted in Apple doing a tiny rephrase. The Better Business Bureau recommended, and Apple conceded, that the tagline “The World’s Greenest Family of Notebooks” needed to be changed to “The World’s Greenest Lineup of Notebooks.” Did you have to read twice to notice the...
The US Army is on its way to discover fuel cells and bio-batteries, suggesting a possibility that the next war would use portable power. To make some productive efforts in this direction, the Department of Defense has come up with a brilliant idea of starting a grant program called Small Business Innovation Research, which would try exploring fuel sources from things like potatoes, sugar, vodka or beer. The US military is taking the US into green times with its new development of lightweight, highly efficient and portable power systems, which will soon be replacing conventional batteries....
Josh Owen’s 8125 Calculator for Monroe, the leading producer of commercial calculators, is a robust instrument in an age of throwaway gadgets. An embodiment of the “less but better” design philosophy espoused by the godfather of industrial design, Dieter Rams, Owen designed the elegant 8125 with improved sight lines, added functionality and a 30% footprint reduction. This is an adding machine that will make even the most taciturn accountant break a smile. More images after the jump. via designboom...
File this under, “Technology I Never Knew Existed,” but Nokia says that in a few years time, they will be able to charge cell phones by using ambient radio waves. This intriguing and exciting technology could lead to huge reductions in energy demand if every cell phone could pull a charge of juice out of thin air. Researchers at the Nokia Research Centre in Cambridge in the UK are working hard on a technology that can harvest small amounts of energy from ambient radio and TV waves. The cell phone would pick up radio wave frequencies as low as 500 megahertz up to 10 gigahertz, which includes...
