It can be difficult to keep up a routine sometimes. It takes true effort to create ritual. At…

Smartphones have gotten progressively smaller, sleeker and more powerful in the past few years, but most of them don’t address one annoying problem – you have to hold them. Oh bother. If you’re looking for something with a little more superhero panache, check out what Asus just unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show – the insanely futuristic Waveface Ultra. It’s a superthin, flexible OLED wristband cell phone that you can snap onto your wrist, sort of like those outlawed slap bracelets from the 90s (remember those?). And the kicker? You can control it by magically gesturing your fingers – touchscreen is so very 2009. HIT...
After having purchased my first iphone I decided to browse Apple’s Application website when I stumbled upon their environmental mission and website. Lets just say I am proud to be an Apple user. Apple reports environmental impact comprehensively. How? They do this by focusing on their products: what happens when they design them, what happens when they make them, and what happens when you take them home and use them. It’s a pretty fantastic environmental site they have going on. It’s colorful, fun, visually appealing, informative, and easy to read and understand. For example, did you know that you can recycle...
Cardboard toys can be really cool since the materials used to make them are recyclable or compostable, durable enough to last for awhile but not so durable that they’ll stay in the environment for forever after the toy breaks and no one wants it anymore. Treehugger.com wasn’t into this product. But hey I dig it! I introduce you to Gizmodo’s environmentally friendly slinky. It’s sold for $18 on uncommon goods, which suggests “Take it for a walk down the stairs, or turn it into a cardboard sculpture. You never thought you’d have this much fun with cardboard!” Consider this the first time...
It’s cute, it’s plump, it comes complete with a curly tail….that lights up. It’s the energy savings piggy lamp. Created by Ariel Rojo Design Studio, the lamp is intended to send a message about energy savings…but it actually sends two. Alternative Consumer writes something true enough, “Are we ‘piggish’ in our power use or – transitioning to an energy conscious approach that benefits both our pocketbook and the planet? I don’t think you”ll light-up a 1,000 square foot room with one of these CFL-tailed little porkers, but they’re symbolically enlightening nonetheless.” Indeed, it could be good as a little night light. But...
Bicycle Design is always trawling up remarkable cycle oddities. This one, the work of UK artist Ben Wilson, is modeled off the kids toys Ben remembers from youth. Though more art than daily mule, ARTIKCAR is steered by leaning the body. It was conceived for a parade masterminded by Walk the Plank, a UK “creative force of artists, theatre makers, pyrotechnicians and event engineers.” Other of Ben Wilson’s art bikes include the Monowheel we covered back in ’08, and the Seebikesaw, commissioned by Brooks, the legendary leather saddle-maker. As computers become more and more our BFFs (singularity, anyone?), we need greener ones: less toxic, more efficient, and easier to upgrade and recycle. Hailing from Korea, this interesting specimen is custom and hand-built, made by a company called Design Hara. Details are a bit sparse–at least for the non-Korean speaker–but here is the basic profile: the Design Hara computer is “built with recyclable green materials,” and constructed with an eye for end-of-life disassembly. Inside is an Intel Core2Duo processor (a cooler running chip), the 4 gig RAM can be upgraded to 8, and the terabyte memory is solid state, a significantly...
New York City is lit with dazzling displays of energy-sucking holiday decorations this time of year. But the pop-up pond at Bryant Park has an alternative lighting rig for its skating rink, open daily until midnight this winter. Illuminated by a new Jewel-Light Luminaire of LEDs, the rink, located behind the main library just a block from blazing Times Square, hosts a free option to the Rockefeller Plaza and Central Park’s Wolman Rinks. Not just little twinkly bulbs, these give off some serious candle power. “The Jewel-Lights add a brighter and environmentally friendlier experience,” said the Director of Design of Bryant Park, Igancio Ciocchini, about...
If Santa were to have the most forward-thinking, sustainable sleigh ever, what might it look like? General Electric thinks it knows. It has put 10 of it’s green tech concepts in one place, devising a sleigh that will make all the elves argue over who gets to co-pilot with Santa on Christmas Eve. From OLED lighting to energy harvesting, this thing is tricked out. GE’s new sleigh for Santa includes nano-coatings to prevent ice build-up and improve fuel efficiency (nano materials, however, are not necessarily green or healthy), self-powered OLED lighting (props on using OLED versus LED…talk about looking towards the future),...
