Nike’s Ecological Efforts Take Center Stage at Summer Speaker Series
As the sun set beyond the hills of San Juan Capistrano, more than 60 locals gathered in a courtyard beside the Ecology Center. They spent Thursday’s early evening hours listening to the opening speaker of the center’s third annual summer speaker series. Mark Smith, the creative director of Nike’s Jordan Brand, spent about an hour discussing the evolution of ecological awareness in the apparel business, citing his company’s recent efforts to be an example in industrial undertakings. Smith helped cement Michael Jordan’s status as the most influential athlete in modern American history. But it wasn’t until recently that he helped launch...

THAT NEW NEW BALANCE: THE 070 ECO SNEAK
What makes the new NEW BALANCE 070 ECO SHOE so squeaky green:     The 070 fits together like a kind of puzzle to reduce waste. The outsole features a rice husk fill that decreases the amount of rubber used in the production of the shoe. The insert, as well as all synthetics, are made from recycled materials. The upper materials use a combination of recycled polyester and natural materials. The upper is also designed so that everything has a symmetrical opposite. This was done to minimize waste as much as possible when cutting the material for the shoes.     What...
CARDBOARD WATER BOTTLES? COOL!
There are many reasons that the hair on the back of your neck might stand up when someone says the words bottled water – all that wasted plastic, the people harmed in the making of said plastic, the communities ‘losing’ their water when it is bottled. But, sometimes you need portable water containers. (Okay, we admit that there are alternatives, but what if?) If that container was made from recycled paper instead, would you drink bottled water then? Some people see no problem with bottled water; in fact they think it’s their only option. Other people choose a portable container, but when push...

Puma’s Clever Little Bag
They claim the new design bags – which took almost two years to develop – use 65 percent less paper than boxes. The distinctive packaging, dubbed Clever Little Bag, is made of sustainable cotton from Africa and recycled polyester. It’s due to be used from next year. Bosses at Puma claim the move will reduce the amount of paper used by the firm by a massive 8,500 tonnes each year and save 20 million megajoules of electricity. However, it’s not thought the new packaging will be anywhere near as good for storing random things in the bottom of you cupboards...
