10 of the Greenest Colleges in the U.S. (slideshow)
Making the green grade nowadays takes more than just recycling a few coke cans and changing light bulbs. Today’s universities have come to the realization that incoming students consider sustainability among their top criteria in school selection. Likewise, college students are changing the face of their campus…and perhaps the world. These colleges outshone the rest:   CLICK HERE FOR THE SLIDESHOW...
TERRACYCLE INVADES WALMART
The idea behind what upcycling start-up TerraCycle does is so simple, it’s genius. Through collection brigades, the company collects very specific non-recyclable trash items that would have gone into a landfill and turns them into new products.  Things like Skittles bags, Capri Sun pouches and Cliff Bar wrappers become folder, lunch boxes, note books and even gift bows.  They have a full line of products and cleaning supplies for home, office, school and pets.  If you haven’t heard of them, check out the company’s SITE for a quick overview.  Seriously, I’m obsessed. Want to see the stuff up close?  Now...
Duane Reade…A Little Greener
or all you NYC eco-nuts who end up running to Duane Reade when you run out of… um…. anything, you’ll be thrilled to hear the shelves look a little bit greener these days. I stopped in this morning (lost my Burt’s Bees lip balm and simply cannot be without it) and was pleasantly surprised to see more environmentally friendly options in many sections. The chain now carries No. 5 toilet paper and tissues, which is 75% Tree Free made from a sugar cane by-product (hey, I’ll try it!), Method cleaning products, BPA-free water bottles and a ton more. Last week,...
MICKEY GREENS
When you hear the term ‘green restaurant’, greasy fast food chain McDonalds is pretty much the last thing that comes to mind. With a reputation for fostering obesity, bad health and environmental destruction by peddling rainforest grown meat, McDonald’s has been fighting a less-than-rosy public image for years. But now the country’s largest fast-food restaurant is hoping to change all that with the opening of their first ‘green’ restaurant in North Carolina — dubbed ‘green’ because the restaurant will offer electric vehicle charging. The McDonald’s features an array of green technologies and is designed to use as much daylight as possible, comes equipped...

Iconic SF Coca-Cola Billboard Gets a Green Makover
Ever pass by the giant glittery Coca-Cola billboard in downtown San Francisco and wonder just how much energy it sucks up? Not nearly as much as it used to, now that the whole thing has been replaced with an LED display that is 80% more energy efficient than the original sign. The new 70 foot long, 30 foot high sign has the same dimensions and the same general look as its predecessor, but the neon lights have been replaced with 4,800 CFLs for the white lettering and strip LEDs for the sign’s background. The end result is a sign that is crisper, brighter, and most...
NIKE Strategizes It’s GREEN FUTURE
At the Pop!Tech Conference this year, one thing to come out of the event are the new Labs that Pop!Tech will be holding to find solutions to many of today’s resource use ‘issues.’ Nike was first with their hand up, asking for help on finding a way to make shoes and other items keep running for miles and miles without the need for new resources. Pop!Tech said they accepted that challenge and will get on it right away. Pop!Tech is the annual conference that brings together some of the world’s most innovative thinkers, scientific researchers, engineers, designers, corporate leaders, policy makers, and other...
Island Def Jam: Goes Green
Recording label Island Def Jam is launching a GREEN INITIATIVE as a part of it’s new Corporate Social Responsibility Program. The aim of Island Def Jam’s green initiative is to trailblaze environmentally-responsible initiatives within the recording sphere. A first for any record label! To give you the skinny on what the initiative will entail…basically the program will start in the label’s private realm, as IDJ’s offices (both CA and NY) will enact a multitude of progressive initiatives (some continued from previous years) with it’s employees. Pervasive tactics will include printer cartridge, paper and battery recycling, the exclusive use of recyclable pantry supplies,...
