It can be difficult to keep up a routine sometimes. It takes true effort to create ritual. At…

Are you a cyclist who bemoans the fact that comfortable biking clothing isn’t stylish? NYC’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and Louis Vuitton Moet Hennesy (LVMH) teamed up to present a challenge to FIT’s students to create stylish and practical activewear for cyclists. The students worked for a semester to develop designs for a poncho, jacket, and travel bag under the mentorship of their professors and designers at Donna Karen New York (DKNY). The top three finalists and their designs were honored at a conference in early June; read on for more, including the winner! The finalists of the Bike in Style Challenge...
Pierre Andre Senizergues, environmentalist and artisan, along with designer Gil Le Bon De LaPointe, got their hands dirty to create a new home for waste in their latest project “The Waste is The Best.” Keeping with Senizergues’ skateboard flare from his world champion days, but daring into the unknown, together these two skateboarders shed new eco light on green design and waste with three new limited edition pieces from Skate Study House. An organic collection, The Waste is The Best gives homage to waste, made 100% of throwaway materials and is constructed from excess skateboard cutouts of laminated wood. “Sustainable...
Can this be? Two of my favourite concepts in one building? In an urban setting like Brooklyn, yet. Cohousing is based on the idea of “intentional neighbourhoods” where people consciously commit to living as a community. And Passivhaus? It is a European standard for building that uses 90% less energy while maintaining healthy air quality. Together for the first time, in Brooklyn Cohousing. The basic principle of passivhaus design is simple: Minimize your losses (with a lot of insulation and sealing) and maximize your passive gains (with solar orientation.) In a renovation like the Brooklyn cohousing, it is like building...
“It’s been said that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, but who knew dumpster diving could uncover the next innovation in green design.” GreenJAR.net had the chance to interview the visionaries and creators behind design firm SKATE STUDY HOUSE whom is well known among design aficionados and skate boarders, who have a taste for functional and effortlessly stylish forms made from re-used goods. Its not hard to respect and desire a the acquisition of aline that pays homage to both the skateboard and modern design. Personally, I came across some of SSH’s (*SKATE STUDY HOUSE) designs a while back. I had...
If you just can’t get enough of computer keyboards during the work day, the Text-ile chair might be for you. Created by designers Dante Bonnucelli and Lamm for UMUL 2009 (Use More, Use Less), a workshop focusing on re-use in design, Text-ile is made out of discarded computer keyboards. It may not be your ‘type’ of lounge chair, but we dig the concept. In creating the Text-ile, the designers used old computer keyboards from VOICE SYSTEMS, a company which offers IT support to computer users with disabilities. When the company upgraded to their VOICEbox system, which automatically reads printed text, and is integrated with a keyboard-less...
The newest trend from high-end designers is posh bicycles. Why does GreenJAR.net love this, because hey, you can spare the air the effects of guzzling gases and CO2 emissions while maintaining that swaggerlicious style of yours. And the best part about all of these bicycles is that they are cruisers. Because a $17,000 cruiser makes more sense than a $17,000 road bike, right? Well regardless of the price, it is without a doubt that these bikes are true reflections of (overpriced) eco-fashion at it’s finest. Art you can actually travel with. First let us introduce you to the HERMES Bicycle,...
Director UBIK has teamed up with MTV to shoot a 50 second short film to help raise awareness of the effects of global warming. The film is a combination of live action and animation, in other words orginality at it’s flyest. It’s comprised of a globe in a classroom which was shot on 16mm which was then tracked and populated with cg toy-like clouds, cars, planes, and cities. Kanye digs it…now what do you think? Is it possible that this is the song of the plastic bag? Plastic’s infamous reputation with the eco-crowd has fueled a creative renaissance that stirs significant introspection into how we have used plastic and how we can use it. Jellyfish. Sculpture. Woven mats. Haute Couture. In early March, art group Luzinterruptus immortalized the plastic bag with an impromtu garden of light. The installation, called “A Cloud of Bags Visits the Prado” occupied the area near The Prado Museum in Madrid for a period of about 4 hours. It included 80 such recycled baggies, which inflated with the aid of the wind. HIT FROM: INHABITAT.COM...
