The latest project from two of action sports’ most influential companies, the Holden and Vans collaboration snowboard boot and sk8-hi shoe are sure to pique the interest of any style-conscious boarder. Unlike most collaborations, the two pieces take a subdued design approach with an all-black upper and minimal branding. But their values are there, in both Holden’s allegiance to contemporary style and progressive materialization, along with Vans’ timeless look. The Sk8-Hi is essentially an upgraded version of its usual self. A combination of premium leather and waxed canvas make for a much sturdier shoe than the average Vans. The sleek blacked-out look...
Environmental and human rights activist Wangari Maathai passed away on September 25th at the age of 71. She was the first woman in east and central Africa to earn her doctorate and the first woman in Africa to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Her organization, The Green Belt Movement, said this on their website, “It is with great sadness that the family of Professor Wangari Maathai announces her passing away on 25th September, 2011, at the Nairobi Hospital, after a prolonged and bravely borne struggle with cancer. Her loved ones were with her at the time.” Maathai spent the early 1970′s working...

This thumbs-up-inspiring LOCAL bike by famed designer Yves Behar and his team at Fuse Project (partnering with Santa Rosa bike builder, SyCip) is a no kiddie trike. The sturdy, flexible front platform carries groceries, surfboards, lumber…even kids – an ideal vehicle for a self-powered life. They certainly took a lot into consideration in this first iteration – locking, lighting, bags and even music (a wireless JAMBOX speaker, of course) have their place on this smart cycle. Not sure wheelies are recommended, however. HIT FROM: ECOFABULOUS.COM...
Trumping other jewelery lines in both stylishness and ethicality, Paula Jerome‘s Atlantic City collection is teeming with charms inspired by childhood summers spent at the seaside city. Tiny baubles fashioned to look like salt water taffy, the local jitney, and vintage postcards offer a twee dose of glamour intended for layering, mixing and matching at your discretion. The 100% recycled sterling silver and 14-karat gold charms recently received a star-studded boost at this year’s Emmy Awards, with cast members and producers from HBO’s Boardwalk Empire sporting Jerome creations on the red carpet. If the show’s win is any indication, Jerome’s jewelery provides...
Global Green USA has released a new PSA to help drive awareness of their new “I AM” campaign – and it’s packed with plenty of famous faces that have supported the organization in the past. The initiative is meant to keep climate change in the public dialog – in particular, the predicted devastating effects rising sea levels will have on people living near coastal areas. Global Green’s I AM Campaign is tackling...
The cost of building new classrooms and schools shouldn’t prohibit students in the developing world from accessing a quality education, but new construction, even using inexpensive materials like cinder block, can run up a five-digit bill in construction costs. Now, Hug It Forward, a nonprofit in Guatemala, has figured out how to build new schools on a shoestring budget by turning the plastic bottles that litter the countryside’s villages into raw construction materials. A plastic school might sound like it’s better suited for Barbies than for people, but the technology—developed by the Guatemalan nonprofitPura Vida—is actually quite clever and allows for...

If you have to travel in or out of Chicago’s busy O’Hare International Airport, take a few minutes to enjoy some fresh organic produce grown right in the airport! According to ABC News, as of Friday, O’Hare is home to the world’s first airport aeroponic garden, meaning that a solution of water and minerals is used instead of soil. The seeds start in small containers made out of “a natural volcanic ash material” and are moved into tall towers once they have grown.
