This Weekend: Chi Town’s Third Annual Green Music Festival
Blowing into the Windy City’s Wicker Park neighborhood this weekend is Chicago’s Green Music Fest. Over 20,000 attendants are expected to eat local, drink plenty and dance crazy to the music of The Thermals, Trampled by Turtles and Yo La Tengo.  In 2010, the Mother Nature Network name Chicago the 9th Greenest City in America. This year, Chicago has stepped up it’s Green Initiative planting over 500,000 new trees throughout the city. New Mayor Rahm Emanuel has made it a goal to promote urban farming by cutting zoning laws and improving accessibility and funding for Chicago’s public transportation system. We’ll be...
BATMAN’S RIDE GOES GREEN
Holy environmentalism Batman! Considering the Dark Knight has a personal fortune of $7 billion, you would think that Bruce Wayne would have made a greener version of the Batmobile a long time ago. However, this task has fallen to designer Gordon Murray, who took it upon himself to create a much sleeker, more environmentally-friendly vehicle for Mr. Wayne. Now we should be clear that this is not Batman’s ride of choice for the upcoming Christopher Nolan film The Dark Knight Rises, but the vehicle that will be used in the Batman Live World Arena Tour. Drawing upon his experience designing the McLaren F1, Murray’s...

Olsenhaus Makes Eco Shoes Fresher Than Ever Before
As a true fashionista it is almost impossible for me to be woed by eco footwear. There is a huge gap in the shoe industry when it comes to stylish, wearable, shoes made from sustainable fabrics that are comparable to the hot designer lines out there. However, Elizabeth Olsen’s line Olsenhaus lifts any hesitation you may have had towards investing in “eco shoes.” What are eco shoes anyways you might ask? Aren’t those those ridiculously hideous hemp looking things. Olsenhaus shuts down that stereotype! Elizabeth Olsen’s entire design philosophy can be summed up in a single phrase: Consciousness is the...
CURRENT TREND: SALVAGED WOOD HEADBOARDS
Call it recycling, upcycling, reclaiming, or salvaging. No matter how you define it, building furniture out of old wood is a major trend at the moment. In the past few days alone, I’ve seen a sofa made out of wooden pallets at a chic restaurant and a bench made from wood from a barn’s haymow. There are plenty of ways that you can adapt the trend in your home, but headboards are currently topping my list. I’ve seen so many beautiful uses of reclaimed wood in the bedroom, and even better, many of these projects are relatively easy to DIY yourself. Come...

Leather Jackets from Vintage Carseats
Platinum Dirt is a new line of jackets transforming the leather industry started by Dustin Page and Aaron Parrish. These one of a kind jackets are handmade out of reclaimed vintage auto upholstery from the genuine leather interiors of old Cadillacs, Lincolns, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar and more. One car becomes one jacket, a soul of sorts, where once the car is retired from the road forever, it is reincarnated as a VIN Jacket. Each jacket tells its own rich history, exudes its own character, and commands the stage with a VIN plate embedded on the chest. Both environmentally conscious yet...
‘Green 4 Life’ Eco Music Festival Rewrites Jamaican Music History
Jamaican music history will be rewritten when EarthboundJamaica, the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) and The Wright Image team combine to present ‘Green 4 Life Eco-Music Festival’. The festival, the first of its kind in the Caribbean region, takes place on July 2 at Rivfalls in Maggotty, St Elizabeth, Jamaica’s Breadbasket Parish. Green 4 Life will have a food court named ‘Sylvia’s Kitchen’, where no styrofoam boxes will be allowed. Instead, biodegradable boxes and containers will be used. There will also be a compost pit where the food used will go back into the ground. Separate bins will...
Nike’s Ecological Efforts Take Center Stage at Summer Speaker Series
As the sun set beyond the hills of San Juan Capistrano, more than 60 locals gathered in a courtyard beside the Ecology Center. They spent Thursday’s early evening hours listening to the opening speaker of the center’s third annual summer speaker series. Mark Smith, the creative director of Nike’s Jordan Brand, spent about an hour discussing the evolution of ecological awareness in the apparel business, citing his company’s recent efforts to be an example in industrial undertakings. Smith helped cement Michael Jordan’s status as the most influential athlete in modern American history. But it wasn’t until recently that he helped launch...
Sarah Kauss’ ‘The Swell Bottle’
Sarah Kauss spent a year designing, developing and testing the S’well Bottle, and her diligence in creating a more sustainable steel bottle isn’t lost on us. But athletes and travelers aren’t the only ones to benefit from the non-leaching, non-toxic bottles: women and children in rural areas are to have improved water sanitation thanks to the company’s partnership with WaterAid. Insulated to keep beverages hot or cold, the “hydration vessel” ($35) is a colorful and stylish way to combat the $7 billion that people spend on bottled water annually....
