or all you NYC eco-nuts who end up running to Duane Reade when you run out of… um…. anything, you’ll be thrilled to hear the shelves look a little bit greener these days. I stopped in this morning (lost my Burt’s Bees lip balm and simply cannot be without it) and was pleasantly surprised to see more environmentally friendly options in many sections.
The chain now carries No. 5 toilet paper and tissues, which is 75% Tree Free made from a sugar cane by-product (hey, I’ll try it!), Method cleaning products, BPA-free water bottles and a ton more. Last week, I found a hair brush made of bamboo from Conair mixed in with all the other plastic ones and Oranix hair mousse in a recyclable bottle. There are signs hanging everywhere with the headline, “You told us you wanted more environmentally responsible products and we’ve heard you.” So maybe I didn’t actually TELL the Duane Reade folks I wanted greener options, but I certainly thought it!
Even better, if you register your Duane Reade Flex Card and join the Eco Club, you get double points on eco-friendly items. Check it out HERE for more info.
Up until recently DR didn’t carry much in the way of eco-friendly products (outside of cleaners, really), so I was really excited to see this too! Appreciate the bigger chains, especially in NYC, stepping up!
Stacey,
Thanks very much for noticing. Our next “push” in green product will be around Arbor Day – April 30 when we will offer 75% tree-free paper product made mostly from fast-growing sugar cane. We’d be happy to send you some product samples if you are interested. Just let me know.
best,
Caren Villarreal
