GREEN JAR has teamed up with MOKUGIFT for 2010 with the mission to foster environmental solidarity by making it easy and rewarding for anyone to fight climate change and by providing the tools to inspire others to do the same. MOKUGIFT’S tree planting website makes it possible for concerned citizens, even those lacking access to planting space, to plant real trees for $1 apiece, either for themselves or as gifts to others. Visual and interactive elements make receiving a MOKUGIFT tree fun, uplifting and memorable. Trees are $1 apeice. For every tree planted, $0.50 will go to GREEN JAR. It’s easy and done in...
Chinese designer Daizi Zheng (whose Stereotype Food Packaging we have featured yesterday) has created a conceptual mobile phone for Finnish brand Nokia that could be powered by sugary drinks. Zheng proposes that the phone could run on a battery that uses enzymes to generate electricity from carbohydrates. This is a client project for designing an eco friendly phone for Nokia. Throughout my research, I found that using a phone battery as a power source is very expensive, consumes valuable resources on manufacturing, presents a disposal problem and is harmful to the environment. The concept is using a bio battery to replace the traditional...
The new CASIO G-SHOCK “Green” Series as the name suggests features three different watch models all with a theme of green colors. Don’t be fooled though, thats about where the “Green” part ends. The models represented include two staples, the 5600 and the 6900 as well as a 2300 model. The watches come in a special natural colored box with GREEN Collection marking the front. Look for the series to hit select retailers soon. Fresh but it would have been even fresher if Casio had gone all the way with the concept of Green and incorporated some environmentally sound technology....
Ever pass by the giant glittery Coca-Cola billboard in downtown San Francisco and wonder just how much energy it sucks up? Not nearly as much as it used to, now that the whole thing has been replaced with an LED display that is 80% more energy efficient than the original sign. The new 70 foot long, 30 foot high sign has the same dimensions and the same general look as its predecessor, but the neon lights have been replaced with 4,800 CFLs for the white lettering and strip LEDs for the sign’s background. The end result is a sign that is crisper, brighter, and most...
Smartphones have gotten progressively smaller, sleeker and more powerful in the past few years, but most of them don’t address one annoying problem – you have to hold them. Oh bother. If you’re looking for something with a little more superhero panache, check out what Asus just unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show – the insanely futuristic Waveface Ultra. It’s a superthin, flexible OLED wristband cell phone that you can snap onto your wrist, sort of like those outlawed slap bracelets from the 90s (remember those?). And the kicker? You can control it by magically gesturing your fingers – touchscreen is so very 2009. HIT...

After having purchased my first iphone I decided to browse Apple’s Application website when I stumbled upon their environmental mission and website. Lets just say I am proud to be an Apple user. Apple reports environmental impact comprehensively. How? They do this by focusing on their products: what happens when they design them, what happens when they make them, and what happens when you take them home and use them. It’s a pretty fantastic environmental site they have going on. It’s colorful, fun, visually appealing, informative, and easy to read and understand. For example, did you know that you can recycle...
