Over at Yale Environment 360, David Owen (who’s a staff writer for The New Yorker, by the way…) lays out some stats as to why New York City should probably get renamed the Big Green Apple: 1. The average Manhattan resident consumes just 90 gallons of gasoline per year — a figure Owen reminds us that wasn’t the norm in the rest of the nation since the 1920s (!). 2. New Yorkers consume far less electricity than everyone else in the United States: 4,700 kWh per year versus 11,000 kWh on average in the rest of the country. I even think that NYC stat...
Treehugger.com has some green halloween tips so we thought we’d take a hit and share! Each year Americans spend billions of dollars on Halloween candy, costumes and other Halloween related décor-type items (over $3 billion was spent in 2006 alone). They’re shelling out $20-50 a piece on costumes and $10 and up on bags of candy. But, this year more-so than in years past, people have enhanced awareness of health issues like cancer, obesity, and diabetes rates, of environmental health, and this year less people have the luxury of spending their hard earned dollars on store-bought costumes so they’re being forced to...
At the Pop!Tech Conference this year, one thing to come out of the event are the new Labs that Pop!Tech will be holding to find solutions to many of today’s resource use ‘issues.’ Nike was first with their hand up, asking for help on finding a way to make shoes and other items keep running for miles and miles without the need for new resources. Pop!Tech said they accepted that challenge and will get on it right away. Pop!Tech is the annual conference that brings together some of the world’s most innovative thinkers, scientific researchers, engineers, designers, corporate leaders, policy makers, and other...

I don’t really understand why magazines are often packaged in plastic in the first place, Creative Review magazine is trialing a plastic bag that isn’t so frustrating. In fact, it sounds downright awesome. It is made from a material developed by CyberPaccalled “harmless-dissolve” (no, seriously…that’s what it’s called) and it dissolves in hot water, making it completely zero waste. Instructions on the bag tell readers that all you have to do is cut off the biodegradable glue strip, put the bag in hot water, and Voila! it’s gone. No waste, no guilt about packaging. Now, there are some big questions...
