There is just something about a wood case that gives electronics an heirloom feeling. Perhaps if cell phones were a bit warmer, a little heavier, a little earthier, people might keep them longer than the average 18 months before upgrading again. NTT DOCOMO might be wondering the same thing, as the company has introduced two prototype cell phones encased in waste wood. NTT DOCOMO states the cases are made of compressed cypress surplus wood from trees culled during thinning operations to maintain healthy forests. That material source alone is enough to assure they’ll never come to market unless in a small, exclusive number....

Early yesterday morning, millions of New Yorkers received a very special edition of the New York Post. 2000 volunteers got together to pass out the “fake” paper that detailed the lethal effects of global warming within the next few decades. The paper was created by The Yes Men and a coalition of activists as a wake-up call to action on climate change. You might remember The Yes Men from earlier this summer when we reported how they were planning to fix the world. Although the 32-page New York Post isn’t, everything in it is 100% true, with all facts carefully checked by a team...
We’ve seen our fair share of backyard retreats, but Manuel Villa’s Habitable Polyhedron shapes up to be one of the most unique dwellings we’ve come across. Designed as an escape for young families: parents and their newborn, the Habitable Polyhedron offers respite from day to day household activities in a family’s back garden in Bogota, Columbia. One windowed side of the polyhedron opens to a teak deck leading into nature; and a skylight casts natural light on a workspace and sofa inside. Once the child grows up, the space may accommodate him in the same manner as would a treehouse or playhouse. HIT FROM: Inhabitat.com...

But there’s no reason that utilitarian has to mean dowdy. Case in point, these slick and super durable Killspencer bags made from recycled military truck tarps and coated cotton canvas. We love the fact that each bag is handmade in LA, features top-caliber hardware, and can withstand the beating that our modern lives are sure to put them through. HIT FROM: Inhabitat.com...
