How harmful are your jeans? If they’re made of cotton, they most likely went through a process that included nasty pesticides, polluting dyes and waste-generating production before you decided to put them on your legs. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Singer Alanis Morissette and actor Woody Harrelson have teamed up to bring us Reco Jeans, which are made with 50% recycled denim. That might not seem like a lot – ideally it would be 100%, but Reco is one of the only jeans companies that has been able to get it to even that level. To make things...
Hip-hop is fighting climate change head on. Bay Area rapper/producer Tajai of Souls of Mischief and Pharoahe Monch have teamed up with mokugift, an organization that enables ordinary citizens to plant tree gifts to combat global warming. Through its Artists and Athletes program launched on World Environment Day, fans can plant trees with Pharoahe Monch, Tajai, Mystic, and DJ Sake-1 among others. As part of the United Nations Environment Programme Billion Tree Campaign, mokugift has made it easy for the public to get involved. For just $1, you can plant a tree in Africa, Asia, or Central America without lifting a shovel. Mokugift enlists...
Hit from checktheweather.net: Research on eco-hip hop, brought me to this dope video from the Brazilian group Esquecimiento Total. We’re all aware that Brazil’s environmental justice fight is a deep history that’s lasted generations – similar to the rest of Latin America, and really the Third World, at that, Brazil’s fights have pitted state/corporate interests against the survival of indigenous communities and their culture & lifestyle for decades. A lot of times we see global warming injustices framed as rich country vs. poor, but we can’t forget the battles communities around the world are fighting within their own borders. Check out...

Last week GreenJAR.net was on site at Jones Beach with the REVERB team to check out how they help artists GO GREEN while performing on tour. Reverb is a non profit organization founded by environmentalist Lauren Sullivan and her musician husband, Guster guitarist/vocalist Adam Gardner. Deeply rooted within the music and environmental communities, Reverb educates and engages musicians and their fans to take action toward a more sustainable future. This particular concert that we happened to check out was for none other than THE FRAY. And later this summer we will be joining REVERB once again as they go on tour with JOHN LEGEND. More about REVERB...
The economic caldera we’re still digging ourselves up from under has put a whole new spin on the definition of “luxury.” (This fall’s New York Fashion Week will be an eye-opener for sure.) With consumer spending in the hole, and chi-chi brands like Hermestightening their croc-skin belts, we might be witnessing the end of luxury goods as we know them. What does a brand, in the end, boil down to? A used paper bag, some talent with a Sharpie, and a link chain. Karl, who? HIT FROM: TREEHUGGER.COM...
Yesterday we saw the short-lived hubbub about Greenpeace draping an Obama poster over Mount Rushmore in order to call attention to Climate Activism by the G8. They’ve followed up with this video that shows the behind the scenes view of the action. So, what did the action actually accomplish? Reality is, probably nothing other than to make a lot of people very aware of Greenpeace’s stance on putting a fire under leaders in the G8. The action alone isn’t much, but the example Greenpeace set for being very visual and very vocal about the urgency of climate change does help us all...

“I love to be able to pass along some of my favorite pieces to someone else who will get to enjoy them as much as I have. I even have many items I never had a chance to wear yet. A few times a year, I bring my outfits, shoes, and accessories to Auction Cause who puts them on eBay for me.” - Kim Kardashian chatting about her recent donation to help benefit the Dream Foundation — a national wish granting organization for adults suffering from life-limiting illness. To bid on some Kardashian originals, visit eBay.com! ...
New Scientist shows us another reason why preserving biodiversity is so important: Preventing the spread of diseases from animals to humans. A new paper from scientists at Portland State University looks at the spread of the Sin Nobre Virus, otherwise known as the Hantavirus (which kills about 500 people per year in the US) and found that increased biodiversity limited the spread of the virus among deer mice. It’s the droppings of the deer mice which spreads the disease among humans: Low Diversity = High Disease The researchers made the connection between increased mammal diversity and lower infection rates among deer mice after conducting field work...
