We’ve heard of protective gear, but this is ridiculous! Or is it? With creative clothing made from condoms popping up all over the internet in such versatile and surprisingly beautiful styles, we have to wonder – could condom garments be an innovative new eco-fashion trend? And would you actually be willing to wear prophylactic couture? HIT FROM: Inhabitat.com...

Environmentally conscious fashion designer Stella McCartney loves Bambi and so do we, for fall ‘09 her ad campaign was Bambi-inspired and shot by Ryan McGinley in the woods of Worcestershire, England featuring Model Sigrid Agren. If you have been following Stella’s work, you’ll probably know that for her LeSportsac collaboration it consists of an animal her son picks out every season which is really cute. The campaign features “cinema’s most famous deer and his pals Thumper, Friend Owl, Flower the skunk — and assorted butterflies and bluebirds.” Look out for the campaign in the September issues of the glossies. “I’m...
There are solar panels in the Heights, wind turbines in the Navy Yard and a greenmarket in Bay Ridge, so it’s no surprise that Brooklyn is now home to what is probably the first green bowling alley in the world: Brooklyn Bowl. Owners and founders Charley Ryan (above left) and Peter Shapiro (above right) signed a lease for their space at 61 Wythe Ave. two years ago and are set to open within the next week. Their commitment to sustainability is one of the reasons it’s taken so long for Brooklyn Bowl to become a reality. They didn’t take their...
Mercedes has confirmed the rumors that have been flying about – they will revive the classic Gullwing Mercedes as an all electric dynamo car. It’s exactly the kind of car James Bond would drive in his next movie if it were available. Not only is it a beautiful update to the classic model, but it’s got the horsepower to back it up – 526 horsepower to be exact. This ain’t your grandpa’s Gullwing – this is the SLS AMG Supercar and is the “exciting future of the super sportscar” if we’ve ever seen it. Wired has it nailed with the...
New York City will have its second hydrogen fueling station, maybe to detour the masses from gasoline still further. Shell, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the US Department of Energy and General Motors jointly have opened it at JFK international airport. Shell looks forward to continue the streak in bringing one more to NYC, in the Bronx, soon. That will ensure the deploying of Shell’s first cluster of hydrogen filling stations....
The folks at the Iowa State Fair were actually considering building a life-size butter sculpture of Michael Jackson to honor his memory. The project ended up getting nixed, but before that happened our friends at PETA offered some friendly advice. PETA suggested fair planners use Earth Balance, a dairy-free natural “buttery” spread, instead. A letter to fair planners from Tracy Reiman, PETA Executive Vice President said, “Making the statue out of cruel and unhealthy dairy products is simply a ‘bad’ idea. In honor of Michael’s concern for kids’ health, please use dairy-free butter for the statue — we’re sure you’ll...
This weekend a friend said something profound: “the more we try to fill the holes in our hearts, the more holes we leave behind.” It seems like an appropriate introduction to this series of amazing images of the holes we leave behind. The Big Hole in Kimberly, South Africa, was once a hill. When Erasmus Jacobs found a shiny pebble in the area in 1866, the diamond rush followed. The mine stakes a claim to being the deepest hand-excavated mine in the world, reaching a depth of 240m (787ft) before backfill and water collection left only 175m visible. VIEW THE...
