Universal Music Group Administrative Services-West Coast, has taken many steps to incorporate sustainable practices at the Arboretum and 10 UCP. The following are just some of the measures that have been implemented:
· Both buildings are now recycling 100% of all beverage containers
· Arboretum & 10UCP pantries and commissary using 100% biodegradable containers, paper plates/bowls, utensils and unbleached napkins
· Arboretum and 10UCP using 30% post consumer & 30% recycled content copy paper
· UMG LA and IGA are using 100% recycled stock and soy-based inks for all stationary
· 50% of all Arboretum and 10UCP centralized toner stock is remanufactured and 100% of all printer, fax and copier toner cartridges are recycled
· Arboretum and 10UCP recycling all batteries and light bulbs. Arboretum using compact fluorescent bulbs wherever possible
· All copiers in Los Angeles default to energy-saver mode
Additionally, the Arboretum has earned the ENERGY STAR Award two years in a row (2007 and 2008) for meeting strict energy performance standards set by the EPA. To qualify for the ENERGY STAR, a building or manufacturing plant must score in the top 25 percent based on the EPA’s National Energy Performance Rating System.
On the East Coast, Island Def Jam’s New York office will kick off its own Green Initiative this month with a “Lights Out” Campaign” – urging employees to be more responsible with their electronics and turning those items off when leaving the workplace.
In addition to a recycling system already in place, IDJ recently held an eWaste Drive as well. Over the years, the label has been practicing sustainable measures such as recycling printer cartridges, using flourescent lighting, and stocking recycled paper.
To transition to an even greener business, IDJ will aggressively incorporate more eco-conscious album packaging designs for all of their releases, produce eco-friendly events – the first was held May 19th at Greenhouse NY in celebration of Redman and Method man’s Album Release “Blackout 2”, and implement greener marketing strategies, all without deterring from the traditional aesthetics of creative decisions.
